Notes from the Autumn Fair

October 2025 · by Edwin Marsh

Café Terrace After Rain study

Four days at stand 14, and the studio learned more than it sold — though it sold plenty. The café terrace study went to its last available frame on Saturday afternoon, to a couple who stood in front of it for twenty minutes without speaking. You learn to recognise that silence. You learn not to interrupt it.

Fairs are the one place the work meets its weather: real rooms, real lamps, real distances. A frame that sings on the studio wall can go quiet under fair lighting, and another wakes up completely. The harbour piece, nearly finished its run, drew a small crowd every evening as the hall dimmed.

People buy the frame they stood in front of longest. The job is to give them the silence to do it.

Thanks to everyone who came, looked slowly, and took a piece of the night home. The spring hang at the studio gallery is next — all six frames together, for the first time. Bring someone patient.
